Selma Porobić

Selma Porobić is an international humanitarian scholar focusing on protection of civilians at war from the integrative perspective of human rights, law, psychology, social anthropology and political sciences. She holds a PhD degree in migration studies from Lund University in Sweden, drawing from an interdisciplinary background in social sciences, obtained from Lund University, American University in Cairo, Fordham University in New York and Oxford University. From 2011-2016 she was an executive director of UNHCR’s only research centre for refugee and IDP studies in the Western Balkans (CESI), and an Assistant Professor of Psychology at International University of Sarajevo. She has also worked as the research manager at Foundation for Women's Empowerment in BiH, where she lead SDC (RRPP) funded project on long-term effects of war-displacement on psychosocial well-being of women in Serbia, Kosovo and BiH, and at various occasions contributed to WILFP BiH project ‘Women Organising for Change in Bosnia and Syria’ focusing Syrian NGOs working with refugees in MENA region and Ukrainian NGOs working with IDPs.

Dr Porobić has authored, edited and co-edited a number of articles and book chapters on the range of issues focusing on personal and societal effects of war-displacement trauma, return migration and reintegration in a post-war society. She has acted as a consultant to UN agencies such as UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, and UNDP and conducted various evaluations for leading INGOs relating to sustainable return in displacement-affected communities. Recently she has produced two educational documentary films with Middlesex University in London (2016), entited ‘Building peace to return home’ focusing plight of internally displaced women in Bosnia and Herzegovina and resourcefulness in rebuilding their home-communities. Currenlty she acts as a Head of Humanitarian Studies Section and an Assistant Professor of International Humanitarian and Social Work at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic.
