“Building for Peace” – Promoting and Sustaining Peace through Reconstruction in the MENA Region

Lessons Learned and Recommendations from German Development Cooperation

The multiple crises in the MENA region with their vast impact of destruction, disorder and displacement require a new, systemic approach towards building — not rebuilding — in order to support transitions to sustainable peace. The vision and efforts of the local population to build a new peaceful society have to be at the center of reconstruction efforts. Meeting the challenges of protracted conflict and violence requires more effective partnerships between different actors, multi-sectoral and bottom-up approaches, a stronger focus on political economy analysis as well as on collective outcomes and joint learning from evidence.

The event will launch a joint publication of BMZ, GIZ and KfW distilling lessons learned from supporting reconstruction efforts in the MENA region and beyond, as well as good practice from German development cooperation. It also highlights challenges and dilemmas as food for thought, and it offers a set of recommendations for further learning and action.
