Opportunity or Pitfall? Connecting the Prevention of Violent Extremism and Women, Peace and Security
This session aims at joint reflection and learning on a highly controversial debate: The linking of the Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) and Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agendas, as suggested by the UN Security Council resolution 2242 (2015). In the context of the civil society contribution to the Swiss National Action Plan 1325 on WPS, the Swiss Platform for Peacebuilding (KOFF) in cooperation with Peace Women Across the Globe (PWAG) and cfd – the feminist Peace Organisation will collect and systematize civil society expertise on specific issues related to WPS. The first thematic focus lies on the implications of linking PVE and WPS. Civil society reports, such as the Swiss Civil Society Alternative Report on the National Action Plan 1325, as well as the Global Study 1325, point to the need for critical assessment of the debate on PVE and WPS.
After a brief presentation on the state of research by KOFF, we would like to engage in a joint reflection and critical discussion on this topic. Based on your practical experience and expertise, what are the risks and opportunities associated with linking the PVE and WPS agendas? What implications do you perceive in terms of gender roles or meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and state building on the ground? What key challenges have you encountered in your work on PVE and/or WPS? Which initiatives or projects have been successful?
The results of the discussions shall inform the further work of all participants on WPS and/or PVE, in order to benefit the work of CSO partners on the ground and contribute positively to the larger policy debate.
After a brief presentation on the state of research on the linkage of WPS and PVE by KOFF, participants will split up in small groups to deepen the discussion on opportunities and challenges with regard to the topic. Each group will be provided with specific guiding questions for the discussion. In the end, we will collect and discuss the results and findings in plenary in a fishbowl discussion format.
