Dr. Thomas Helfen

Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany

Since May 2016 Dr. Thomas Helfen is Head of Division Peace and Security; Disaster Risk Management at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Since 2001 he served as Deputy Head of Division South Caucasus and Central Asia (2001-2005), Deputy Head of Division United Nations (2005-2006), Head of Division for Economic Cooperation and Development at the German Embassy, Beijing (2006-2010), Head of Division South Asia (2011-2014) and Head of Division Parliament and Cabinet Affairs (2014-2016).

From 2010-2011 he took on a Special Assignment with the Division for Development Oriented and Transitional Aid, Food Security and Crisis Center. Prior to working at BMZ Thomas Helfen served as Resident Representative of Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Thailand, Desk Officer in the Federal Chancellery, Deputy Secretary General of the Basic Programme Commission of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Chief Executive Officer of a Civic Education Institute in Bonn. Thomas Helfen studied Law, Political Science and Sociology and holds a PhD from the University of Bonn in Political Sciences.
